Blog Post #3

This week for my genius hour project, the first thing I did was encounter a problem. I prepared myself to go out to buy the materials that I thought I needed to make my scrunchies. However, I realized that I needed to research the specific materials, and how much of each material I would need. So, I re-evaluated my timeline and swapped week 3 and 4. Problem solved!

This week I spent my time researching different DIY tutorials,  I found the best methods on Pinterest and Youtube. Firstly, I learned that I prefer video tutorials over static tutorials. While a static tutorial is still helpful, I find that I personally benefit from watching someone carry out a method.

I went through multiple different tutorials. I realized that I will be using aspects from various videos. For example, this video clearly listed what materials I would be using for this method.

After watching multiple videos, I found the one that resonated with me the most.

This vlogger taught me various ways to make a scrunchie. I learned that you can make a scrunchie with a sewing machine and with a hot glue gun. I also learned that you can customize your scrunchies by increasing the width of your fabric. A general rule of thumb is that if you are using elastic fabric, you should measure the elastic around the width of your own wrist, so that it comfortably fits when you are not wearing it in your hair. I picked up a couple of tricks and methods along the way such as the use of safety pins, and pre made hair ties. I will be attempting all of the methods that I viewed in the tutorials, and picking the one I like the best. If it turns out that I cannot operate a sewing machine, I now know that I can always resort to a hot glue gun!

From here, I now feel prepared to hit the thrift stores outlined in week 1. I can confidently buy the materials that I need to successfully carry out my Genius Hour project.
