Blog Post #2 - Which thrift.
This week I devoted my time to Genius Hour by researching different thrift stores in Hamilton. What I learned is that Hamilton is saturated with locally owned thrift stores, all different types. They range from vintage, to designer, to plane jane. What I found interesting is that Google Reviews was a great resource for me to see which thrift stores are on the pricey end and which better match my budget. I mentioned in Blog Post #1 that I would like to keep the cost of each item to under five dollars. Based on this variable, I have narrowed my thrift stores of choice down to:
- Value Village Ancaster
- Plato's Closet
- Deja Vu Used and New Clothing Accessories
- Hawk and Sparrow
It is great to know that Hamilton is very invested in recycled clothing. During my research, I began to grow curious about the amount of waste that clothing items contribute to our landfills annually. I came across the following image.

From this horrifying image I began to wonder how else Hamilton could be combatting the textile crisis. I discovered that we are home to an Alpaca Farm called Alpacas from Eigth and Mud. This farm sells 100% sustainable and ethical Alpaca wool. One can buy socks, scarves and hats from this Farm. Also, they can buy wool to make their own clothing.
It is great to know that sustainable textiles can go beyond recycled clothing!
